Physician Assistant - General Surgery

Western Michigan University School of Medicine is seeking a full-time (40 hrs/wk) Physician Assistant within our General Surgery Residency Program. Under physician supervision, this position is responsible providing medical and surgical care to patients of varying type and acuity.
•Functions in the role of advanced practitioner to coordinate comprehensive care
•Performs assessment of patient health status by obtaining health and medical
history, performing physical examinations identifying medical and health risk
and needs, and records changes in health status.
•Performs and/or assists with designated procedures both in and out of the
operating room and outpatient ambulatory clinic procedure room.
•Writes orders/prescriptions for standard formulary medications, laboratory,
radiographic studies and consultations.
•Coordinates the scheduling of admissions, diagnostic evaluations, follow-up
exams, laboratory tests, referral to home care, social services, and other
agencies in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
•Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.
•Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading
appropriate books, journals and other literature.
Education, training, experience:
•Meets state requirements governing the qualification for Physician Assistants.
•Knowledge of the laws of the State of Michigan in regard to clinical activities and
the Code of Ethics of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
•Experience and interest in assisting with surgical procedures is preferred.
•Licensed in the State of Michigan as a Physician Assistant or eligible to be
licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
•Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
•Current NCCPA certification or eligible for certification. Maintenance of CPR
certification; BLCS certification preferred.
